Newport Blvd Construction Update
Friday, January 26*
Potholing will take place at the northeast corner of Newport Blvd. and Hospital Rd. While this work is taking place, the right turn lane will be closed. Access to Old Newport Blvd. can be made using the Newport Blvd. off-ramp.
Activities will take place during the daytime, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Potholing is the digging of a test hole to expose underground utilities to determine their horizontal and vertical location. A vactor truck will be used to assist with this activity.
Please be advised that this work may be loud from the vactor truck.
Week of January 29* (UPDATE: Rescheduled to week of February 5)
Pipe bursting activities will take place along northbound Newport Blvd. between the Newport Blvd. ramp and Hospital Rd. Previous pipe bursting activities had taken place in November.
Pipe bursting is the replacement of the old pipe by fragmenting the existing pipe with a bursting head tool and installing a new pipe in its place. The new pipe is placed in the same alignment as the existing pipe.
Activities are tentatively scheduled to take place Wednesday, January 31. Pipe bursting will start around 8 a.m. and will continue until completion, possibly extending to nighttime hours.
Expect equipment and vibrations close to the work area. The public may notice increased construction noise, similar to a constant hammering sound.

*All dates and times are subject to change based on inclement weather and other operational factors.
There are a few remaining finishing work activities such as curb and gutter, re-installing a street light pole, and sidewalk paving that will require the intermittent daytime closure of the Newport Blvd. off-ramp for crews to safely perform the work for the next 1-2 weeks.
The on-ramp will remain closed for several more weeks before the ramp is completely open.
There will be night work for a sewer lateral for the City of Newport Beach on Newport Blvd. More information will be provided as the work approaches.

The Newport Blvd. District 6 Trunk Sewer Relief construction project will replace an existing 60 year old regional sewer pipeline with a larger sewer pipeline to increase the sewer flow capacity and reduce the risk of spills. Construction will take place along Newport Blvd. between Pacific Coast Highway and Industrial Way in the City of Newport Beach and Pomona Ave and 17th St in the City of Costa Mesa.
