OCSD only accepts applications submitted online. Please review our website at www.ocsd.com/jobs for a complete listing of available positions. Before you can apply for a job with OCSD, you must first create an applicant account with a username and password. OCSD’s online application system is user friendly, and the most effective way to stay informed regarding available positions.
I don’t have a computer; can I still apply for a job with OCSD?
Yes. A computer is available for public use in the Human Resources Building located at 10844 Ellis Avenue, Fountain Valley, CA 92708. Alternatively, you may visit your local public library to obtain access to a computer.
How will I know what jobs I am qualified for?
The minimum requirements for a position can be found directly on the job announcement, and on the Classification Specification. You should review each announcement carefully, noting the minimum qualification requirements, description of job duties, and any other special requirements. The Supplemental Questions, which can be found on the third tab of each job announcement page, address the minimum and desired qualifications of the position. Taking the time to thoroughly review each announcement and class specification will help you avoid applying for jobs that may not interest you, or for which you may not qualify.
Can I apply for any position at any time?
No. The Orange County Sanitation District only accepts applications for positions that are currently posted on our jobs website at www.ocsd.com/jobs.
How do I know when to apply?
When a position becomes available, the Orange County Sanitation District will post the job announcement on our jobs page at www.ocsd.com/jobs. The announcement will contain the salary range, information on the position, the application and selection process, examples of duties and essential qualifications, including education, experience and applicable licenses and certificates. For certain positions, OCSD may also advertise available positions in industry trade publications or online job boards.
What if the position I am interested in is not currently available?
What does it mean when the closing date on a job announcement is listed as "continuous"?
When this deadline-free approach is indicated on the job announcement, it means that the position will close without notice once a sufficient number of applications from qualified individuals have been received, as deemed by the Orange County Sanitation District.
What are some other things I need to know when applying?
In order for your application to receive the full consideration it deserves, it is very important that you fill out the online application completely, and provide accurate information regarding your education, previous work experience, applicable licenses and certificates and all other relevant information. Do not simply state "See Resume" when asked to describe your responsibilities and experience. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of information you provide on the application itself. Your resume will only be reviewed for clarification purposes. All statements made on application materials are subject to investigation and verification. False statements may be cause for disqualification, removal from the eligible list, or discharge from employment.
Can I submit a resume instead of the online application?
No. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an online employment application.
If I have previously completed an application, will I be automatically considered for other positions?
No. You must submit a separate application for each position in which you are interested in applying. Your application is evaluated on how well your education, training and experience match the needs of the position for which you are applying. The online application system allows you to save an application you have created, and make modifications as needed, in order to apply for other job opportunities in the future.
Why do I need to complete a supplemental questionnaire when applying for a position?
The supplemental questionnaire focuses on the key responsibilities of the position for which you are applying, and allows you to elaborate on your previous experience in areas of particular relevance to the job. Make sure you fully complete this important addendum to the application, as it helps us properly evaluate your qualifications for the position.
What should I do if I need assistance submitting my application?
For step-by-step instructions on how to complete a job application, please review the online employment application guide.
What should I do if I am experiencing technical difficulties while submitting or after submitting my application?
If you are receiving an error message or experiencing other technical difficulties, please call toll free at (877) 204-4442, select option 1, for further assistance.
What happens after I submit my application?
You will receive an e-mail notification stating that your application has been received by OCSD. You should save the e-mail in the event that there are any issues with submission of your application. Each application received is given careful review and consideration. Recruitments that generate a large volume of applicants may take longer to process. Due to the volume of applications that are received, most general correspondence will come in the form of an e-mail notifying applicants of the next step in the process and/or dismissal from further consideration.
How can I check the status of my application?
Please log in to your account to check the status of your application.
What should I do if I have a change of address or phone number?
You should update your online applicant account immediately and notify OCSD by emailing email@example.com. If we are unable to contact you because you have moved or changed your phone number without our knowledge, your name may be withdrawn from further consideration. The Orange County Sanitation District will not be responsible for updating online applicant accounts.
What should I do if I cannot access my account or forgot my password?
Please call toll free at (877) 204-4442, select option 1, for further assistance. OCSD cannot make changes to your applicant account information.
What are the steps or phases of the recruitment and selection process?
The steps of the recruitment and selection process vary depending on the position, and may consist of, but may not be limited to, any or all of the following components: written exam, practical skills assessment, and/or panel interview.
Does everyone who apply for a position take a written or practical test?
No. Before any decision is made regarding who may be invited to test, each application is carefully reviewed based upon the requirements of the position. Only those candidates whose qualifications most closely match OCSD’s requirements for the position will be invited to take part in the competitive testing process. If you receive notice that you are not among the highest qualified candidates, do not be discouraged. Sometimes the competition is pretty tough! We encourage you to try again in the future should a position become available.
If selected, what happens after I complete a written or practical exam?
Generally, applicants will receive an e-mail notification regarding their test results. If you have successfully passed the written or practical exam (where applicable); you may be invited to the next phase of the recruitment and selection process.
What should I do if I am contacted for an interview?
Preparation is key. Don’t walk into the interview not knowing much about the position or the Orange County Sanitation District. Be certain that you know when and where to report and the position for which you are being considered. Make sure you are on time, or early for the interview.
What will the interview be like?
Generally, the interview is conducted in a panel format. Often the panelists will come from different departments, and/or outside agencies. During your interview, you will be asked several questions to help the panelists understand your qualifications as they relate to the position.
What happens after the interview?
All candidates who participate in the interview process will be notified of the results by e-mail. If your contact information has changed from the time you submitted your application, be sure to update your profile by logging into your account at www.governmentjobs.com. Once a job offer is extended to the selected candidate, a background investigation, post-offer medical exam and drug screening (if applicable) will need to be successfully completed for employment with OCSD.
What types of benefits does the Orange County Sanitation District offer?
The Orange County Sanitation District offers a range of benefits, which are subject to change whenever applicable collective bargaining agreements, laws, rules, policies or plan documents are revised (usually annually).
