Newport Blvd District 6 Sewer Project

Pipe Bursting Construction During Week of November 27

Post Date:11/22/2017 9:00 AM

Work is currently taking place along northbound Newport Boulevard between Coast Highway and Hospital Road. The Newport Boulevard/Old Newport Boulevard full ramp closure will remain in place 24 hours/7 days a week until December.

Crews are preparing for new sewer pipe installation using the pipe bursting construction method.  Pipe bursting involves a lot of preparation and post-bursting work.  Actual pipe bursting is anticipated to take place the week of November 27.

No work will take place on Thanksgiving or the day after Thanksgiving.

What is Pipe Bursting?

Pipe Bursting GraphicPipe bursting is the replacement of the old pipe by fragmenting the existing pipe with a bursting head tool and installing a new pipe in its place.  The new pipe is placed in the same alignment as the existing pipe.

For this project, over 900 feet of old clay pipe will be replaced with a new and larger diameter High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe that will last over 50 years. A temporary bypass pumping system will be in place and there will be no disruption to sewer service.

 What to Expect

  • Equipment and vibrations close to the work areas.
  • Increased construction noise and activity may be noticeable, especially during actual pipe bursting activities.
  • When the bypass pumping system is turned on for approximately 2 weeks:
    • 3-4 parking spots will need to be taken.
    • Crews will be on-site 24/7 for continuous monitoring.

Work Hours

Work hours are 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Extended work hours and some weekend work will occur as needed.
